Tomorrowland Festival 2014

2014 marked the 10th year of the Tomorrowland festival, a huge dance music event held in Belgium with fifteen stages and an eclectic mix of decorations and special effects. This year, the centrepiece of the main stage consisted of a giant mechanical face resembling a mystic deity, complete with an intricate array of cogs and sprockets.

Brilliant Stages, the set-build experts, brought in Artistic Licence to assist with the motor control of the cog and sprocket simulation. The brief was to use DMX to control the speed and direction of some 27 motors. The equipment needed to interface with the AC motor drive inverters supplied by Lenze.

Artistic Licence achieved this with a custom built 19-inch rack containing multiple DMX controlled relays, splitters and analogue converters. The rack was assembled at ALI ready to tour, then used throughout the festival for about 15 times a day for 6 days.
